Ridgid R88040B 18 Cm And R86042B 11 Cm Octane Brushless 18v Grinders

Although several AEG tools are still not available in North America, many people hoped to see the new 23 cm dual battery grinder, and the newly released AEG Fusion 13cm 18v brushless grinders. Today I am happy to announce that Ridgid will soon bring both the R88040B (18 cm) and R86042B (11 cm Octane Brushless18v Grinders) to market. One thing to note is there have been some changes in specs from the AEG models, so keep that in mind. The biggest difference is that the dual-battery grinder’s disc has been reduced by approximately 5 cm, going from a 220mm (roughly 23cm) to an 18 cm (178cm). It is not known if Ridgid will provide a guard large enough to fit a 23cm wheel. We’ll have to wait to see. These two new grinders are great additions to Ridgid’s Octane tool line.

My thoughts: Although I havent used a large angle grinder, I do 90% of my metal cutting in my shop with Ridgids current brushless 18v grinder. Their current version is no slouch so we can expect very impressive performance from the new 11 cm model as well as the 18 cm model. The 11 cm and 18cm models have many great improvements, but let’s start with the 11cm model. The rear grip area has been reduced, which should improve comfort for extended periods of use. this unit drops 1,000 RPM from the AEG Fusion unit at 10,000 on the Ridgid vs 11,000 on the AEG. hopefully this means the Ridgid has picked up some torque for the decrease in speed. Theyve also added a removable dust screen which helps keep metal grit and other particulates out of the motor and bearings, which should ultimately extend the life of the unit. Another nice feature is an LED overload indicator light that tells the user when theyre applying too much pressure.

The trigger handle on the 18 cm model can be rotated to three positions. This makes it ideal for cutting and grinding. The attachable auxiliary handle can be used in three positions in addition to the rotating handle. This allows for greater versatility in various applications. Compared to its AEG cousin, this unit gains 800RPM coming in at 6,300RPM vs the AEG at 5,500 One of the most noticeable features of this grinder is that it can run on one or 2 batteries, but theres a catch. This unit will operate with older Ridgid batteries but only if you have 2 of them. If you have one of the new Hyper Octane Batteries it can run on just 1 but also 2 for even more power and runtime. I think they did this to ensure that users didnt experience lack of power caused by older battery tech. While it may be slightly inconvenient, it still allows users to get great performance from older batteries in the Ridgid 18v platform. Make no mistake this not a 36v tool.
