How To Stop Bamboo From Exploding

Its a good thing that I keep a change of clothes at work. And that I dont wear leopard-print underwear.

OK, lets back up a minute.

I am finishing work on the next I Can Do That project. It requires approximately 1,000 bamboo skewers, which are cut to length of 8-1/10 cm. That 1,000 is not a typo.

When we are building these projects, we try to follow the I Can Do That column rules. All tools and materials must be purchased from a local home center. And so I wanted to find a way to cut these skewers using the tools in the I Can Do That tool kit. There is no band saw. Only a chop saw and a handsaw.

So I bound together 100 of the skewers tightly with blue tape and marked on the tape where I needed to cut the bunch. I stopped the miter saw, and started the cutting slowly. About three skewers later the entire bunch exploded, and I was glad that Id visited the Little Editors Room before beginning the operation.

He said, “Cockling” with a handsaw, hand tool boy.

Then he said hed do it with a band saw, which was my first choice as well. So I bound up another 100 skewers in tape and made the cut on the band saw with no problem.

Looks like well be recommending the readers use snips or a handsaw to trim these skewers , perhaps while watching Ingmar Bergmans Scenes from a Marriage.

OMG, about the leopard-print underwear comment above. My grandmother used to say that you should wear underwear that will look good in an emergency room. This was a rule my mother blatantly violated in her youth, with hilarious consequences.
