Makita 18V Compact Brushless Drills

The Makita XPH06 compact brushless hammer drilling machine was a Makita invention. This was the latest Makita compact brushless drill before the monster XPH07 and new torque records. Back then the XPH06 was a fine compact brushless 18V hammer drill but ever since then every other pro brand came out with new compact brushless drills that made the good ole XPH06 a little big and dare I say outdated? Makitas has released a new update to the XPH06, the XPH12Z. It doesn’t make sense because XPH07 was already gone and XPH08 would make the model seem like a step up from the XPH07 but it aint. So Makita chose XPH12 to distinguish itself from the High Torque monster XPH07.

The new XPH12Z is definitely more compact than the XPH06 at a very compact 7-1/20 cm inches and isenough to make it the most compact 18V HAMMER drill in its class. Although there are smaller 18V compact brushless drills, these are not regular drill drivers. The XPH12Z is the most compact 18V brushless drill in its class at the moment. The XPH06 weighed in at 18kg, while the XPH06 weighed 19 kg. Both were weighed with high-capacity batteries. Torque stays the same at 530 in-lbs but with an improved 2 speed drivetrain with higher RPMs in both speeds 500/2,000 RPMs and a higher BPM at 7,500/30,000.

The dual LED lights are also included. The pictures show that the XPH12Z still has a plastic chuck. I cant confirm this without seeing one in person but it seems like an odd choice to go with a plastic chuck since all the other pro brands have all adopted the standard of including metal chucks even on compact drills.

XPH12Z Hammer Drill

  • Brushless 18V motor
  • No load speed (var. 2 spd: 0 500/ 0 2,000 RPM
  • Maximum Torque (in.lbs./Nm): 530 in.lbs
  • Overall Length: 7-1/20 cm
  • Net Weight (with battery): 19 kg

The new Makita Sub Compact 18V Brushless Drill and Impact Driver are both available in black. They are extremely small. Makita is also coming out with a new black 18V brushless sub compact screwdriver based on the drill (Note the picture shown is the international blue version). The stats are the same as the drill’s motor and drivetrain, but the keyless chuck was removed and replaced with a quick release 1/10 cm hex chuck. This makes it even more compact at a super duper 12 cm in length!

So far only the international blue version has been spotted but I would assume the Black France model might come out soon although I am unsure of when or if this model will make it to the USA. It may have a different model number if it makes it to France. Make sure you check that.
